Starting Your Own Soccer Jersey Collection
It's one thing to be a big supporter for your own soccer team, but it's a whole different case when you become obsessed with the entire sport. Amazingly, fans like those exist and are growing more in both number and in their degree of obsession. Aside from living, breathing and talking soccer, they collect all the merchandise they can get their hands on. It's those people that have managed to develop their own individual soccer jersey collection. Sure, each soccer-centric shop may have its own wide range of jersey selections available for purchase, but truly dedicated fans put a lot of effort into tracking down even the extremely rare jerseys just to add the shirts to their growing collections. It...

Player Positions in Soccer - A Primer For New Fans
With the popularity of soccer increasing in North America a lot of people are beginning to take interest in the sport. The recent World Cup and the fact that the U.S. had a team that did relatively well has further increased interest in the sport. But for people who are just beginning to watch soccer the formations and different player positions can be confusing. Here, therefore, is a simple primer on soccer positions for the novice. First, each team starts with eleven players, generally broken down as forwards, midfielders, fullbacks, sweeper and goalkeeper. Forwards, as the name implies, play forward and are the attackers and goal scorers. In most formations you will have three forwards, two on...
Soccer Coaching Tactics - Is it Better to Push Up Fullbacks on the Attack Or to Defend Deep?
What Does it Mean to "Push Up" Soccer Fullbacks? The term push up refers to soccer fullbacks or midfielders moving forward toward the halfway line when their team is attacking, so they can support the attack. What Does it Mean to "Defend Deep"? Defending deep refers to leaving your fullbacks deep on your half of the field, usually within your defensive third and sometimes within your penalty box (you can give them specific boundaries to stay within, such as to not come past the top of the penalty box arc unless it is to kick away a loose ball) when your team is attacking. Defending deep means to only push up your fullbacks as far as they can go and still recover to defensive positions in case your...
Soccer Cartoons
Soccer cartoons are all over. You can see them in sports stores, malls as well as bookstores. Soccer, a contact sport, brings action and thrill to the world. If you aspire to be the next soccer super star, you might want to get some motivation from soccer caricatures and sketches. Motivation, in every person's undertakings, is an essential element towards achieving a desired objective. Being a fit and talented soccer player is not enough to be at your best. You should be aware that in every sport that is being played, there are aspects or factors which are called "intangibles." Your attitude and perception of yourself are hidden factors which make a difference when you play the game. Believing that...

The Future History of Soccer - Predicting the Next Sixty Years
Like a lot of people who went to elementary school in the 1980s, I grew up hearing wondrous tales of what the world would look like in the year 2000. Based on the fictions spread by my various teachers, we faced one of two future outcomes: the Soviet Union (remember them?) would either trigger a thermonuclear war, or we would all be zipping around in jetpacks and flying cars, wearing oddly matching jumpsuits and eating only large pills and colored liquid. Of course, neither of those things happened, and though my car is very much attached to terra firma, the intervening years have brought a number of changes to society, the likes of which nobody would have likely predicted in 1984. The point, I...
Why Coach Soccer? - How To Have Fun
Warren Buffet might not know soccer, but when he said, "Tell me your heroes and I'll tell you how your life will end up", he was onto something. When it comes to coaching, everyone wants a say but few are willing to turn their words into action and take a team... even under 8's which is where yours truly started. How can You enjoy coaching soccer? Let me count the ways: 1. Coach your kids and you get to spend more time with them at something you can help them have fun at AND enjoy mastering new skills. 2. Coaching young people of any age gives you the opportunity to have a massive and important influence on the future of your community and country! This is not just talk. Ask any adult who has...

The Diet of a Professional Football Player
There was a time when professional footballers would eat and drink pretty much whatever they wanted. Some players would regularly choose steak chips and peas or an English breakfast for their pre match meal and would consume excessive amounts of alcohol during an evening. Nowadays football is a multi billion pound industry and players know they have to look after themselves and eat sensibly. All athletes have nutritional requirements that need to be met and in this respect the diet of a professional football player is no different. Football is a physically demanding sport that requires lots of energy. A large number of calories will be needed to meet this demand with lots of carbohydrates in the...
Five-time winners, Brazil, may have to do more than win the FIFA World Cup 2010 if they want to please their fans back home. They will need to play Samba style and not muscle their way to the crown. The 1970 World Cup was a seminal event in Brazilian -- and world -- football. Having established their post-war football supremacy, in 1958 and 1962, Brazil lost in 1966. Their winning the title back in 1970 served to shed any plausible doubts about the quality of Brazilian soccer. Also, it was Pele's last World Cup. Most importantly, that Cup was won playing with unmatched Brazilian flair. Coach Dunga, of the current squad, is himself a World Cup winner of 1994. And Dunga wants results, first. He is...
Artificial Grass Pitches at World Cup 2010
Throughout the past week, artificial grass has made its way to a monumental global sporting event, the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The highly anticipated event's Algeria versus Slovenia game debuted close to 20 million threads of artificial turf woven into natural grass blades. The game, held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, was the first World Cup game played on a synthetic grass field. It was tested successfully in the Under-17 FIFA World Cup 2003 in Finland, but not the regular World Cup soccer event. The stadium in Nelspruit has also used synthetic grass fibers intertwined under natural grass for the playing surface. Synthetic grass fibers were individually dug a total of eight...
World Cup 2010 Face Painting Ideas
Face painting is one of the ways with which people express their feelings towards something they love and adore. Historically, it was used by warrior tribes as a means to express their anger and frustration. Today it has gotten a lighter and more pleasant side to it. It is considered an enjoyable activity at festivals, sports events and parties. It is an effortless way of entertainment even at home, just to break the tediousness. Even adolescents love to be a part of it, let alone the kids. Face painting has become more of an art today and there are many face painting designs which one can learn, if he/she wants to enjoy this activity. The recent trend sees face painting as continuously growing...
World Cup Spread Betting - Get Your Football Clubs in Order
Tough new guidelines from UEFA will make clubs operate within their means from the start of the 2012/13 season. The move is set to bring more discipline to club finances and also take the pressure off player's wages and transfers fees. Clubs will have to compete within their revenue. UEFA believes it will encourage investment in infrastructure, sport facilities and youth academies. It also believes it will help the clubs to sustain themselves in the long term and settle their liabilities in the good time. The break even clause is a new departure for UEFA whereby the clubs will be monitored for 3 years. They will not be allowed to spend more than they earn from revenue give or take 5 million. They...
2010 FIFA World Cup Commercials - Hyundai's Ad Upsets Catholics
If you have been watching the World Cup at all lately you have probably seen a whole lot of commercials and advertisements from a wide range of companies. One in particular who seems to be pushing themselves very hard through what seems like a never-ending arsenal of ads is Hyundai. There are two particular commercials that the car manufacturing company produced that have now been banned due to questionable content that upset some viewers. The two, half minute commercials in question were dubbed "Communion" and "Wedding". They featured certain elements of the Catholic faith being portrayed in a way that seemed pretty offensive to some Catholics. Both of the commercials were meant to exemplify the...
2010 FIFA World Cup Lessons For Businesses
The 2010 FIFA World Cup produced some of the most unexpected, and at times controversial, results in World Cup history. We saw the previous world champions, Italy, leave the tournament in the first round without putting up any kind of performance. Disagreements in the French camp ended their cup dreams in disgrace. And who could forget the series of goals that should have been but were disallowed and those that did count but were clearly illegal. Tempers flared and tears were shed while some exceeded their own expectations. It all makes for very good television. There are many lessons that can be learned from this year's tournament and businesses should capitalise on these. I would like to share...
Goalkeeper - The Ultimate (Tragic) Hero?
3rd day into the World Cup and it seems that the goalkeepers are playing their role. On one hand you have Robert Green (England) and Faouzi Chaouchi (Algeria) who allowed really soft goals that cost their team valuable points, on the other hand you have Vincent Enyeama who saved his team from a terrible defeat when stopping Leo Messi and the Argentinian strikers time after time. Goalkeeper is a cruel role, if a striker misses a wide open shoot nobody remembers that after the game, but if a goal keeper makes one mistake he's scarfed for life. l mean look at what the British media is doing to Green, feel bad for the guy. In England's case, there has been a tragic Hero in every big tournament since the...
Soccer Goalkeeping Footwork Drills
In soccer, a goalkeeper's footwork defines how skillful he is in a good number of aspects. The importance of footwork is seen when a goalkeeper needs to change his stance and position to ready him to dive for a ball out of his normal reach. Footwork is a major factor in determining how a goalkeeper would be able change directions and to accelerate towards a given target. Footwork keeps a goalkeeper's stance controlled and not easily compromised as it assists in distribution of his weight evenly. Many coaches agree that the goalkeeper's weight should be distributed in the sense that three-quarters goes to the forefoot, and a quarter goes to the rear foot. This would ensure optimum mobility for the...
A Goalkeeper's Safe Hands Are Nothing Compared to the Safe Hands of Our Almighty God
Being a goalkeeper in soccer, or football, is a most crucial role. Normally, before the goalkeeper is beaten every other player has been beaten, and yet goalkeepers have been accused of doing the most silly things at times. Having played in goal, it was a role I used to enjoy, but I much preferred playing in what used to be called the half back line. My position was right half when you were up with the forwards and involved with the forwards and back defending when necessary. It was one of these positions whereby you were involved in the match almost the entire time. Quite recently, the Manchester United goalkeeper kept the ball from entering his net for 1,302 minutes, and we are told it is a world...
Shahid Ali Khan - Pakistan Hockey Goalkeeper
-> Shahid Ali khan ( Born: December 16, 1964 ) is a retired field hockey goalkeeper from Pakistan, who later became the Pakistan's goal keeping coach. Shahid Ali khan represented Pakistan for about twelve years from 1981 to 1993. From 1986 to 1989 he was dropped from the side because of his poor form. He made his comeback because of his absolute firmness of courage and was able to succeed Mansoor who was the number one custodian in the year 1990. His great match temperament helped him once again to become the goal keeper for the Pakistan Hockey team. His memorable performance of stopping a Dutch penalty stroke in 1982 world cup semifinals at his age of 17 that too in his second international match...
What Are the Qualities of a Football Team Goalkeeper?
A football team is made up of 11 players. The 11 players are made up of defenders, midfielders, wingers, strikers or forwards and just one goalkeeper. There is no way a team can play a match without a goalkeeper. And there is no way a team can have more than one goalkeeper at the same time on a field of play. A football team goalkeeper is the last man or woman standing. If a goalkeeper is beaten during a football match, a goal is as good as scored because he or she is the player responsible for keeping the goal in order to prevent the opponents from scoring goals. Now, here are the qualities of a goalkeeper: 1. Clear Vision: A football team goalkeeper is supposed to have good eyes. He or she ought...

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Ghana Vs Serbia Preview
Group D is very competitive with Serbia, Ghana and Australia vying for a pre-quarter-final spot in the world cup alongside Germany who are expected to qualify comfortably from the group for the round of 16. The relatively tricky Group D kicks off on June 13 with Ghana and Serbia meeting in a battle of strangers. This is the first ever meeting between Ghana and Serbia on a football field, and their match on Sunday is a high stake battle. While defence has been Serbia's strong suit, Ghana displayed their attacking flair in World Cup 2006, decapitating both USA and Czechoslovakia, and holding the ultimate winners Italy to a draw, in the group matches. In South Africa, however, Ghana will miss Michael...
FIFA World Cup 2010 - Team Profile England
Ranked 10th in the FIFA world rankings, England boast many star players. They are placed in a relatively easy group C, along with USA, Algeria and Slovenia. Though England are expected to be group leaders, they have consistently underperformed, whether at Euro 2004 and 2008, or World Cup 2006. Arguably, England face greater pressure than other teams because of the British media that hold the players up to 24x7 scrutiny, and hype everything they do, to feed frenzied English fans who actually beg for more. The players are thus converted into tabloid superstars, and their real or imagined talents are presented in an exaggerated way in newspapers and on television. And it does not help that many of the...
World Cup Goalkeepers - Zeljko Kalac, Australia
Zeljko Kalac is an Australian goalkeeper of Croatian descent who made his international debut in 1992. Since then he has played in over 50 international games, his most celebrated stint being with AC Milan. Known as the Spider on account of his two meter plus frame and flailing arms, Kalac started his career with Sydney United. He later moved to Leicester in Europe but it was not an eventful sojourn. A call to Roda JC, a little later, gave Kalac the push he needed. The Dutch side reached the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in 2002, and Kalac moved to Serie A with Perugia. Luck smiled on Kalac when Perugia's fortunes dipped, and Kalac found himself as the back up keeper to the celebrated Dida in the AC Milan...

Soccer Mom - From Carpooling to Real Soccer Coaching
For others, the word soccer mom would only ring as a soccer coaching or playing mom. They may not know that it is a term in the early 90's that refers to a homebound mom whose job is basically limited to tending the house and the children. Habitually describe to be carpooling her kids, from house to school and various activities including but not necessary a soccer game or practice. The term received a negative connotation from some who belittles the tedious work of a homemaker. She's stereotyped to being a pushy, overly protective, and freaking mother who only relies to his husband's income. This also described with other unlikely behaviors such as obsessed and careless. But today, for a lot of...
The accuracy of their soccer passing drills determines to a large extent the overall performance of the entire team. These drills should be supplemented by other soccer drills such as dribbling, shooting, defending or tackling the ball. A team that can manage to pass the ball from one player to another without losing the ball is poised for better success. In the current world of soccer where everything is professionalized, it is the responsibility of the coach to understand and pass this knowledge to your players. Perfect soccer passing skills require more than just kicking the ball back and forth. There must be clear communication between the team members which can either be through coordinated...

With good dribbling skills, you will be able to control the ball well and you can easily direct it to anywhere you want it to go. If you will watch how some of the best players play, you will notice that most of them are great dribblers. To be blunt about it, if you will not develop your dribbling skills then there is very little chance that you will be a great soccer player. If you want to develop your dribbling skills, the best thing that you can do is to practice soccer dribbling drills on a regular basis. Like in other kinds of soccer drills, dribbling drills instill the necessary...

People Who Made It Big Into Soccer
Soccer is famous throughout the world as a game of skill and excitement. It is full of twists and turns and is not a very easy game to predict. Many people play this game from a young age with dreams of one day making it into the big time as a professional soccer player but alas not all of them make it. But these following people definitely made it. Edison Arantes Pele definitely needs no introduction. He was only 15 years old when he broke into the Brazilian world cup squad and managed to play as well as score two goals. Another of his claims to fame was to be named Athlete of the Century by the Olympic committee. Pele had a wonderful 25 year playing career that produced around 1000 goals to his...

Even though many of us love to play soccer, for the most part we'll never make it to the big time. Keep your head up because you can still show off your cool soccer tricks and moves on the field. A word of warning, it is a good idea to master the basics first. As you master the basics, you can then take your game to the next level by learning some advanced soccer tricks. Motivating Your Players
Many young soccer players come to practice or report on game days with a high sense of internal motivation. However, the question is "Is it the correct motivation for the tasks at hand?" As coaches, our challenge is to ensure that individuals' intrinsic motivation stems from an intent corresponding with the specifics of the team's practice or game. This is not easy because we are dealing with individuals. Our society brings young players to our doorsteps with low self-esteem, poor habits, ballooning egos, grandiose visions, etc. To make it even more complex, many of these mindsets mask deep-seeded personal issue. However, we are recreational coaches, and the community is our team. So we must become...
US Women's Soccer Rocked Again
Despite the not-so-unexpected lackluster performance of the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team in Beijing, its female counterpart definitely rocked it out and bagged the gold again as they delivered a tight defense against Brazil's fearless attacks. It was Carli Lloyd who made the goal after a thrilling 120 minutes of going to and fro the rain-drenched field and amongst a roaring crowd of 51,612. Lloyd's skillful dribbles and strike permitted her to perfectly land the ball into the goal just six minutes into overtime, allowing the Americans to retain their defending crown with a 1-0 victory against their neighbors from the South. The Brazilians put up a good fight, with the aggressive attacks of FIFA...
World Cup History
World Cup Soccer is an international association football competition participated by the men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association or FIFA, the sport's global governing body. The world's first international football competition was a challenge match held in Glasgow year 1872. It was a match between Scotland and England. At that stage the sport was rarely played outside the United Kingdom, but it grew in popularity in other parts of the world at the turn of the century. It was held as a demo sport with no awards at 1990. However, in 1904 Summer Olympics the IOC has upgraded the status to official event. FIFA was founded in 1904. The organization tried...
The Irish Soccer Tradition
Irish soccer has a colorful history and endless legacy. Ireland, dubbed as the "Silicon valley" of Europe, is a country of soccer enthusiasts and athletes. The world's most loved game reached the shores of Ireland through John M. McAlery, a Belfast merchant. He was on a honeymoon in Scotland when he saw the game being played. He fell deeply in love with the soccer game to the point that he introduced this contact sport to Ireland in the year 1878. Northern Ireland was the first venue for the soccer games in the country. Dublin came to know this sport only in the year 1885. From then on, the entire country has been playing soccer and it still remains as the most popular sport in the country. There...
Does the World Cup Tipster predictions service really work? Having been subscribed to this tipster service since the start of the 2010 World Cup, I have found a couple of high priced winners through the email tips of this service and must say that it has been quite consistent so far. Considering the high odds recommended by the tipsters, it does not really take a very high strike rate to actually come out with a profit every day. Yet, the system that this tipster service use has been finding winning bets regularly since the start of this tournament, allowing me to replicate the betting activities of the professionals who have regularly profited from past soccer cup tournaments. With the World Cup...

Training For Soccer
The system we have in regards to training for soccer in America is steadily improving. However there are still some flaws. I coach many kids of various ages and notice some key things missing from all of them. These are the 3 areas I feel need the most improvement: 1- Long Passing 2- Movement off the Ball 3- Understanding of Defensive Marking on Set Plays Long passing is really not taught to young players in America. Players are taught to use the inside of their foot for short passes and their laces for shots. When it comes to placing a pass over 30-40 yards, that is left to chance. Players need to be taught how to put back spin on a ball so it'll hold up behind a defense, how to drive the ball hard...
Lionel Messi - Celebrating a Soccer Icon
Lionel Messi's emergence as the world's footballer of the year 2009 was no surprise to so many soccer enthusiasts who have followed the progress of this young soccer icon.
